How CBT can help with Stress & Anger

Pressure in our lives can’t be avoided. It can even be helpful: it helps us meet deadlines; take on new challenges and generally keeps us on our toes. However, when pressure turns to stress and anger it can start interfering with our enjoyment of life, our sleep pattern, our mood and our general day to day functioning.

Similarly our thinking styles have a huge influence on how we approach and respond to life’s daily challenges. For example, some people hold the belief that they must attain the highest standards in everything all the time. They allow themselves no slack, no room for error and no compassion when they don’t quite match up. At the CBT-Partnership therapists help clients identify their unique thinking patterns and habits. These cognitions can then be examined rationally and modified where necessary so that clients can learn to inoculate themselves against their own irrational and unhelpful thoughts.

A Case Study: David

David is a very hard working young man. When he makes small mistakes he berates and criticizes himself sternly. When others disappoint him, upset him, he is inclined not to speak up about it but just keeps his feelings to himself. What he is noticing now that he is enjoying his work less, meeting friends is becoming a chore and he is at times irritable and grumpy with the people around him. It all came to a head when his computer malfunctioned at work and he got so angry that he completely destroyed the computer and some furniture in his room. David was referred to the CBT-Partnership by the occupational health department of his employer.

In the therapy he learned to adopt a more balanced life style, recognize his own demandingness and develop a more balanced view of making mistakes and he learned to be kind to himself in the face of adversity.
