How CBT can help with Depression

Depression is a serious mental health problem that goes way beyond feeling a bit sad or a bit under the weather. Depression is crippling and it's symptoms may be: enormous overwhelming sadness, no longer experiencing pleasure in things that used to be pleasurable, irritability, sleep problems, loss of appetite and sometimes contemplating suicide as a solution.

Some people have been battling with depression for most of their lives. Sadness and misery seemed to be their habitual reaction to life's challenges.

Other people suddenly find that life is no longer as sparkling as it was. 'It felt like someone had suddenly turned the lights off and everything became grey'.

A Case Study: Samantha

Samantha suffers from depression

Samatha's Early Life Experiences

Samantha grew up in a family of six. She was the quiet one in this outgoing and boisterous family. Her mum and dad and her two sisters and one brother were all very loud, outgoing and friendly people. She was often encouraged by them to go along, play and have fun, but Samantha found that very difficult. At times she tried, but felt clumsy and was never as outgoing as the rest of her family. At school and in the village people commented that "She is the quiet one".

Samatha's Beliefs

"I am different. People don’t like me. The world is a difficult place. I will never be able to fit in, whatever I do.
