The Team

Lynne van Bilsen

Consultant Cognitive Behaviour Therapist Lynne van Bilsen, CBT Partnership

Lynne initially trained as a psychiatric nurse in New Zealand and went on to train as a cognitive behaviour therapist in 1977. She has worked in this capacity in the NHS and Private Sector for 18 years before returning to New Zealand and taking up the post of clinical tutor for a post-graduate course in cognitive behaviour therapy. She has continued to work in private practice until the present time. Lynne regularly attends training workshops to keep up with most recent clinical developments.

Special Interests

Her special interests are anxiety problems (including obsessive compulsive problems and post traumatic stress disorder), depressive disorders and couple & family problems.

Previous Experience

Lynne worked as a clinical nurse specialist providing CBT services in the NHS. She lead CBT services at the Priory Hospital in North London for 2 years and following this has worked independently in the private sector.

Henck van Bilsen

Consultant Cognitive Behaviour Therapist & Consultant Clinical Psychologist Henck Van Bilsen, CBT Partnership

Henck celebrated his 25th anniversary as a clinical psychologist in 2004. He originally trained in the Netherlands as a clinical psychologist, where he also completed his psychotherapy training, specialising in cognitive behaviour therapy. Henck is an accredited member of the British association for Behavioural and Cognitive Psychotherapies (BABCP). He is also accredited as a trainer and supervisor by the BABCP. He has been on the board of professional organisations like the Behavioural and Cognitive Psychotherapies and the Division of Clinical Psychology. He currently divides his time between the CBT-Partnership and the University of Hertfordshire where he leads the masters degree programme in cognitive and behaviour therapies.

Special Interests

Henck is very interested in complex and long-standing problems. He regulalry presents at national and international conferences on motivational issues.

Previous Experience

Previously he held positions as the academic director of the Auckland Institute for Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (New Zealand), consultant clinical psychologist (personality disorders) and deputy director of the ‘Pedologisch Instituut Rotterdam’ (the Netherlands). Since 1990 he has worked in private practice.


Liz Hutchinson

Senior Associate Cognitive Behaviour Therapist

Liz Hutchinson, CBT Partnership Before focusing on a career in Cognitive Behaviour Therapy, Liz worked in the mental health field as a psychiatric nurse. In addition to generic mental health work, Liz has undertaken work with young people, those suffering with enduring and complex mental disorders and specific work with Eating Disorders and addictive behaviours. Her interest in Cognitive Behaviour Therapy began when working with treatment resistant eating disorders recognising its value with this client group. Following this she commenced her Master's degree completing this in 2007. Since joining the partnership she has enjoyed the challenge of applying the cognitive behavioural model to a diverse group of people, in both individual and group settings. Liz was accredited by the BABCP in 2008.

Brian Thomson

Associate Cognitive Behaviour Therapist

Brian Thomson, CBT PartnershipBrian is an experienced psychological therapist. He currently has an appointment as a senior lecturer in Mental Health Studies at the University of Hertfordshire. At the University he is – among other things – responsible for teaching cognitive behaviour therapy principles to aspiring cognitive behaviour therapists.

He has joined the CBT-Partnership to be able to focus in his work as a therapist on Cognitive Behaviour Therapy.

Training

Brian has a professional background in psychiatric nursing and has received a diploma in cognitive behaviour therapy. Extensive experience in the treatment of emotional problems like anxiety and depression as well is in the treatment of people with serious and enduring mental ill health.

Special Interests

The treatment of people with personality problems.

Donna Chamberlain

Chartered Psychologist & Associate Cognitive Behaviour Therapist

Donna Chamberlain, CBT Partnership Donna received a First Class Honours Degree in Psychology and Zoology from Bristol University in 1982. She went on to complete her Master’s Degree in Clinical Psychology at the Institute of Psychiatry in London. Since qualifying as a Clinical Psychologist in 1986 Donna has worked in a number of NHS settings, adopting primarily a Cognitive Behavioural approach to child and family mental health issues. She has been involved in a research project investigating Self-Injurious Behaviour in people with severe learning difficulties. Donna has also been extensively been involved in teaching child clinical psychology to psychology students, medical students and other related professionals.

Training

Donna has worked as a Clinical Psychologist for Kingston and Esher Health Authority and Leicester Mental Health Services Trust. Her work encompassed children ranging from birth (in a special care baby unit) right through to adolescence. She has worked in many different facilities including in-patient and out- patient mental health settings, schools, hospitals and individual’s homes. As well as mental health and behavioural issues she has also treated children with specific, moderate and severe learning difficulties. Donna was responsible for organising and delivering the Child Clinical Psychology component of the Leicester University Clinical Psychology Master's Degree course and she has developed training programmes for school nurses, health visitors and staff in care homes.

Special Interests

Donna is particularly interested in children’s development during middle childhood and the problems associated with this period such as anxiety disorders, issues of self-esteem and behaviour problems.

 

Lyn Parsons

Associate Cognitive Behaviour Therapist

After gaining a B.Sc First Class Honours Degree in Psychology through the Open University in 2001, Lyn began her career in forensic psychology, specifically following her interest in working with patients with complex, long standing mental health problems who had also offended. This led to her working in a private medium secure environment with patients suffering from schizophrenia. Subsequently, she moved to the NHS High Security Hospital Estate at Broadmoor Hospital where she delivered CBT to male patients who were accommodated within the Dangerous and Severe Personality Disorder Service, by virtue of having been diagnosed with personality disorder/s and psychopathy.

She completed her Masters Degree in Forensic Psychology in 2004 and has also worked for H.M. Prison Service, specifically with juvenile offenders aged 15-18 years.

Special Interests

Lyn is currently studying for a Masters Degree in Cognitive Behaviour Therapy and extending her clinical skills to assist patients with life problems such as anxiety and depression. She finds clinical work highly rewarding due to the rate at which client's make progress and still retains a particular interest in helping those with enduring and challenging personality difficulties.
