- Common Questions
Sometimes people visit our clinic and they have come to the conclusion that they need to make changes in their relationship or family. At other times the assessment conducted by the CBT-Partnership reveals that couple or family problems are at the root of the psychological problems.
The family/couple Cognitive Behaviour Therapy consists of two elements: communication skills training and problem solving training.
Families and couples get into trouble as a result of lacking communication skills.
Research has shown that successful couples and families use the following communication skills:
- They practice active listening
- They express positive & negative feelings appropriately
- They catch each other being positive (as opposed to criticising each other)
- They can compromise
Successful families and couples can also work together to resolve problems. There is no blame culture when things go wrong. Instead family members work together to resolve the problems.
