Previous Experience & Training

Maura completed a Ph.D. in Criminology at the University of Bristol and worked for some years as a university lecturer in London, specialising in Criminology and Gender Issues. As part of her interest in the psychological dimensions of Criminology she decided to train as a psychotherapist, completing a four-year Diploma in Psychotherapy, followed by an MA in Psychotherapy (Distinction). Maura’s interest in Cognitive-Behavioural Therapy began when working as a senior psychotherapist with patients referred by their GPs in primary care, recognising its value in addressing a wide range of psychological difficulties. Maura currently divides her time between working as an associate Cognitive Behaviour Therapist for the CBT-Partnership and fulfilling the role of Clinical Lead of an NHS psychological therapy service. Her passion is Mindfulness based cognitive therapy and her other interests are Cognitive-Behavioural Therapy for depression, anxiety, chronic illnesses, anger problems and low self-esteem. Maura has experience as a psychotherapist in a variety of settings, including a male prison, a women's centre and a hospice for the terminally ill and with a variety of client groups: people suffering from a bereavement and with adolescents.
